By Anwesha Baruah

Bitterness around Yog Guru and businessman Ramdev are not just impeded to his ‘Hindutva’ philosophy, but it also encircles his business conglomerate. Owing to his immediacy with the ruling side, he keeps making loose remarks. This time, by creating a controversy by targeting Erode Venkatappa Ramasamy, commonly known as Periyar, and his followers, he has also put his FMCG enterprise at stake. This is plainly apparent with trending hashtags like #ArrestRamdev and #BoycotPatanjali generating over 60,000 tweets on Twitter by 6 pm on Tuesday.

The controversy ignited with Ramdev referring to the proponents of renowned activist Periyar as 'Intellectual Terrorist'. In a video that emerged on Monday, he went over slamming shoes on Periyar and his followers. Ramdev even went on to criticize the followers of Ambedkar implying their views create division and disunity. M. K. Stalin, president of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has strongly condemned this targeted attack on Periyar and asked him to take back his words. The video with Republic Tv popped out on November 11 and faced strong criticism by Twitteratis demanding an apology.

Meanwhile, the yog guru did not issue any follow-ups but was seen retweeting his supporters with hashtags #ISupportRamdev and #WeSupportPatamjaliProducts, until last Monday when he defended himself in front of presspersons. He denoted his actions as logical and not being fundamental.

This is not the prime time Ramdev has sparked controversies with his awful remarks. In a video from Maharashtra on October 19, the yog guru was heeded saying “atheists like Periyar and Ramasamy’s backers are boosting in multitudes and spreading intellectual terrorism”.
