Current Politics – A Game of Chess?

Politics is a field where all your predictions fall short. Isn’t it? Right from the day of campaigning to the day of government formation, there is always a possibility of twists. And something very relatable happened in the state of Maharashtra on the 24th of November, 2019. The morning wasn’t the same that day. The voters from the state of Maharashtra got the shock of their life when they heard that the ‘PRESIDENT’s RULE’ that had been imposed on the state on the 12th of the November by the Governor of Maharashtra, Mr.Bhagat Singh Koshyar, had been discarded within a single night, when the entire nation was in deep sleep. Something so unexpected had never happened in the History of the state before.

On one hand the newspapers read, “The Shiv Sena party chief, Uddhav Thackeray supposed to be the next Chief Minister of the state of Maharashtra.” And ironically on the other hand, the News channels yelled, “Mr. Devendra Fadanvis takes the Oath as the new Chief Minister of the state of Maharashtra, for yet another time in a row!” Tragedy, chaos, and mystery had blurred the hopes and aspirations of the ‘Maha-vikas-aghadi’ (the alliance of three major parties of Maharashtra, namely Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress). There was a great amount of Confusion and stress in the air. Ajit Pawar, the ‘Bishop’ of the NCP, was the man behind this huge twist. He kept away from answering the media, for the entire day! He had not only cheated the party but also the voters and his family as well. A battle between the Pawar’s (Uncle Sharad Pawar and Nephew Ajit Pawar) at such a crucial time and that too for the sake of government formation was not what any individual might have thought of even in the wildest of the dreams. Once, Groucho Marx had said, “Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.” And it feels so true to me at this point of time.

Only a week ago, Ajit Pawar had made a bold statement, warning the members of his alliance and specifically the members of his party (NCP) to keep the thought of betraying the alliance and its objectives miles away from their minds but shockingly, he himself followed the wrong practice. Lack of leadership qualities and loyalty is definitely reflected from this act of his. But, this doesn’t end here! Another twist shook the political fraternity at large. Just when the new government had began its regular working; the honorable Supreme Court asked the government led by Devendra Fadanvis to prove the majority in the assembly within 24 hours! Yet another time, the same person, Mr. Ajit Pawar played the spoil-sport by resigning from the post of Deputy CM, because of which the government was forced to withdraw its name from the floor of government formation.

Later last night, it was officially announced that Mr. Uddhav Thackeray will be hitting the climax of this drama by taking the oath as the Chief Minister of the state on the 28th of November. At the end of the day, after crossing so many hurdles the Maha-vikas-aghadi finally announced the “CHECK-MATE!”
