Kappa or Tapioca!!

By Sreekanth

Good evening folks!! Hope you are enjoying the weekend so far. I am here with another famous dish from Kerala. It is the ever-loved Kappa or Tapioca.

Tapioca is the root of Cassava plant.  In Malayalam tapioca is known as Kappa. This large root is cut in to small pieces, skin is removed and boiled in water with salt. The water is then drained off and served as a snack or breakfast dish.

Tapioca is normally served with the locally famous chutney made of shallots, chilli and coconut oil. Another classic combo is tapioca and fish curry, mainly the sardine fish curry. Kappa goes well along with any other spicy curry.

Kappa is served as a side dish for meals as well. The root is sliced into small slices after removing skin and fried in oil to prepare chips which is similar to the potato chips.

So, the next time you visit the God’s own country do try this famous delicacy. It’s worth a try!!

Cost per Plate of Kappa: Rs.30 – Rs.60

Where to get:

  • Most of the restaurants in Kerala will serve this.
