Science: Is it Overrated?

Science: Is it Overrated?

Ladka toh engineer, Ladki toh doctor” was the dialogue in 3 Idiots and is the true story of any family. Only one thing has changed i.e the boy can be doctor or girl can be engineer. For this, parents lure the children post 10th by saying “Beta, Science lele, bohat scope hai” and everyone knows then what happen. In initial days it was said that 10th result was most important. Those who used to get 90% took science, 70% took commerce and 40% took arts. At that time, science was valuable as very less people used to take it. But today it is more ordinary than anything. Things are valuable if their quantity is less but Science stream students are maximum. For me, Commerce and Arts stream students are more valuable

My friend’s sister who shifted for Science in 12th to B.Com and CA now, is very happy. She wasn’t fit for Science and after initial adjustment she cleared CA Level 1 and has given Level 2 exams. Moreover, she tops her college in B.Com. It is necessary for students to do their passion not what the society says. Law, economics, psychology are the most prestigious professions for arts students and are most demanded today. Accountancy and finance is the foundation of Commerce and no industry could function without it. Moreover our Indian Education System gives secondary importance to it which is very wrong. They should be also 4 year degree courses with inclusion of trending areas. I don’t understand if parents want their children to do B.Tech i.e. Science degree why they pursue them to do MBA instead of M.Tech. Parents should give leverage to their children and should allow them to do their passion.

In today’s world with cut-throat competition, people with interdisciplinary skills are required i.e. a student in Economics or Law should know Analytics for analyzing crime data mostly. Accounting, finance need Cyber Security for protection of data. Even doctors need to know some analytics and mathematics today. It really doesn’t matter if you are Science, Commerce or Arts graduate. As far as money is concerned, remember Manish Malhotra at the end of the day is a tailor so if you are skilled in it, you can earn maximum. So now according to me Science has become overrated as even Commerce or Arts students have an equal demand. All major decisions of nation are taken by lawyers of Supreme Court i.e. Arts graduates. A company’s cost and finance is decided by Commerce graduates. A project manager should know Economics, accounting and finance even though he may be an engineer.

Basically, what I want to convey is as inter-disciplinary skills are in so demand. You should go to a stream where you want to go. After or during graduation, you can pursue even those out-of-stream skills which are required. For e.g.:- if you want to become an accountant, you should go to Commerce stream. Software like MS Excel could be done during B. Com. So it is a request for parents not to force students to pursue Science in name of scope. Let them pursue what they want but with 100% dedication and conviction as at the end of the day, people should be satisfied with what they are doing.
