Good evening folks!!Hope you are having a great day. Today I am here with a dish which is very popular in Kerala. It is Varutharacha Meen Curry.

Meen is the Malayalam word for fish and varutharacha means roasted. So, this is a fish curry made with roasted coconut. For making this curry, fish is cooked first in tamarind water mixed with turmeric powder, chilli powder and salt. The taste will enhance if it is kept overnight. Then the cooked fish is added to chopped onion, tomato, ginger, garlic and green chillies along with a paste of roasted coconut and coriander. Finally, once the cooking is done the curry is seasoned with coconut oil and curry leaves.

This type of curry could be made with most of the sea fishes which are available in Kerala. Mainly we cook Indian Mackerel, Sardine, Tuna and Prawns this way.

This curry will be brownish in colour thanks to coriander and will have a very thick gravy thanks to coconut paste. This will be spicy and goes well with rice and Kappa (Tapioca).

Cost per plate of Varutharacha Meen Curry: Rs. 80- Rs. 150

Where to get:

  • Most of the restaurants across Kerala will serve this delicacy.
