Shakuntala Devi: The Human Computer in 2020

I was so engrossed in the movie; my eyes reflected the burst of energy that Devi was on the screen. I felt the bottom of my popcorn tub and came up empty-handed, well that was weird it finished too fast. Just then I saw another hand coming down into it again, it was the person sitting next to me and then she turned her head; oh my lord, it was Shakuntala Devi or maybe the ghost of her.

She said “Sorry I didn’t mean to but then again I’m not sad that I did”. She was just the same quirky, bold, and unabashedly unapologetic. At the end of the movie, she squeezed my hand and told me “That was too little screen time”. I asked her how and I wish I hadn’t. She said while we were watching the movie I simultaneously counted the seconds and divided it to my life seconds and they weren’t enough” and I told her “They never would be.”

Shakuntala Devi: The Human Computer in 2020

Amazon Prime brings us another story that will undoubtedly be better than the ones before. The movie has been believed to cover the life of Shakuntala Devi who the world knew by the name of Human Computer. Shakuntala Devi was a genius, a mathematician and these words fail to measure the magnitude of her brilliance. As much as of a genius she was, she was also an Indian woman, and no matter what time you travel to.

Indian women will always remain beautiful, bold, and unique in their own ways. She was an inspiration for this country as well as women across the globe and I hope Amazon Prime’s Shakuntala Devi: The Human Computer movie manages to showcase that fully and not just the tip of the iceberg.

Amazon Prime’s Shakuntala Devi: The Human Computer dropped the trailer a few days ago and what we saw in that approximately three minutes was enough for us to form very high expectations from the movie. In the trailer we see Vidya Balan playing Devi and everything seemed like a bed of roses for her, from a supportive father to the world being astonished and left baffled at her calculations to her finding the love of her life. Although nothing can be as simple and we see that when problems start to arise after she becomes a mother.

Shakuntala Devi: The Human Computer Amazon Prime is a memoir of Shakuntala Devi’s struggle of balancing her genius, the need to showcase her talents, change lives, and motherhood. Shakuntala was in no way an ordinary woman and her daughter’s wish for her to be one just gives a glimpse of what could have been wrong in their relationship. The trailer has certainly managed to irk our curiosity by showing us how humane Shakuntala was; it makes us believe that she was just like one of us struggling at times and did not have it all together as opposed to our idea of perfection when it comes to our idols.
